Dean Mason
Cardiologist | St. Mary's Medical Center
Dr. Dean Mason is honored for his professional longevity in the medical field. Since 2000, he has been a part of St. Mary’s Medical Center as an honorary staff member. He began working at the institution in the early-1980s, filling the role of physician-in-chief. He has also held the role of chairman of the department of cardiovascular medicine for the institution. Prior to joining the St. Mary’s Medical Center staff, Dr. Mason taught at the UC Davis Medical Center, provided medical services for the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and completed a residency and internship at The Johns Hopkins Hospital.
Dr. Mason pursued his medical training at Duke University, earned a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry in 1954 and an MD from the institution in 1958. He is a diplomate with the National Board of Medical Examiners, the American Board of Cardiovascular Diseases and American Board of Internal Medicine. Over the course of his career, he has contributed more than 1000 publications to various prestigious medical journals. In addition, he became the first cardiologist to publish a symposium on coronary thrombosis for patients with Myocardial infarctions in 1981. He served as the editor-in-chief of the American Heart Journal from 1980 to 1996.
In addition, Dr. Mason is an honorary professor in medicine at Peking University Health Science Center. He has served as the co-chairman of the United States Pharmacopeia Committee Revision. He maintains affiliation with the Medical Research Review Board, the National Institutes of Health and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. He is also linked to the American College of Physicians, the American Heart Association, the American College of Chest Physicians and the Royal Society of Medicine.
